Firehouse

This is a 19th century firehouse with a 21st century fire truck squeezed into it. Glad I don't have to park in that garage!

Light

This is a weird little photo. The light is one of two at a mid-century restaurant. I'm sure it's a bitch to change the lightbulbs but I sure wish they would!!!

I wouldn't even know what to do with these mushrooms I saw at the GreenMarket!

Flatiron

This is my beloved Flatiron Building in the evening but the point of this photo is the sky. That's what we have seen all week...gray skies! We haven't gotten as much rain as predicted and most of it has been kind enough to come late night or early morning so that it doesn't bother me. But those gray skies are there every morning and every afternoon!

Street Entertainment

Another street performer. He sounded pretty good to me. I couldn't see where he was getting his electricity from...for that electric guitar.

Insane Costumed Person

It wasn't the hottest day yesterday  but the humidity was killer. This guy was dressed in costume head to toe including a furry face mask. When he had accumulated an audience he did a routine spinning a pole. Made me warmer just looking at him.

Old Fashioned Hardware

Do you know what this is?

It's on the stoop of an 1830's brownstone in Greenwich Village.

It came in particularly handy when the streets of the city weren't paved. Dirt streets were often muddy even without rain in the forecast. People threw their dishwater (and worse) out the windows. Horses weren't choosy when they felt the need for elimination.

This metal hardware was intended for people to scrape their shoes before entering the house.

Container Store Addiction

Who loves the Container Store???

More errands today but only 5 stops. Still 91 degrees and that was only at 1pm.

Hot Summer Day

Compost barrels and clothing recycling in the foreground

There was even a book seller today

It was 91 degrees for the compost run. The tiny GreenMarket looked shady and cool. A round of 9 errand stops was followed by home and a welcome cold beverage before the real heat of the day!

These are a couple of shots of the circular staircase at the  Jefferson Market Library. I love the old building though I'm not that much a fan of stairs...at least, of walking them!

Walk-in Movies

I've been to a few drive-in movie theaters but I haven't taken advantage of the many outdoor movie showings that pop up in NYC. This one was going to have Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory but I didn't wait for nightfall.

Impromptu Picnic

After the compost run we grabbed some lunch and took it to the park. We hoped for a bench in the shade which apparently everyone else wanted also. But we scored one of the little tables for our alfresco dining.

City Sprinklers

This is the kind of sprinkler city kids get to run through to cool off on a hot day. For years people would open a hydrant on a sweltering day. Eventually the fire department installed a plate that controlled the water flow and made it spray more gently. It's still disturbing that children are playing in the streets but there always seem to be adults around to watch for cars.

English

There is an epidemic of poor grammar usage. It's combined with the abbreviations that people use to text till you don't know whether people choose to write poorly or if that's all they know. (That sentence was no literary prize!) Some say that language naturally morphs over the years as evidenced by reading Shakespeare. I don't like it!

NYC Cow

I saw this cow on the way home last night. Thank goodness it was chained up so it doesn't roam freely!
