Sidewalk Performance

There is usually some kind of performance around or in the main subway stations. This is at Union Square Park.

Outside the Whitney

The new Whitney museum opened recently. It's located at the southern end (or beginning) of the High Line and has been under construction for a long time. Apparently there are so many people coming to visit that the food vendors consider it a good place to sell. The last picture shows a portion of the line of people waiting to get in. The people can be seen through the glass atrium that houses a café. No shortage of food opportunities there.

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to the Poppa!

Backyard Picnic

The temperature hadn't hit 70 degrees and there was a misty sprinkle while running errands. So instead of going to the park with a picnic we quickly stuffed some sandwiches in a bag and went to the backyard...where it would be easier to run for cover in a downpour.

Should we sit at the table or on the lounges?

Nice views

Well, some views aren't so bad!

I love these Victorian fountains. In this tiny park, it is definitely the centerpiece.

Family Funday

All week I had seen signs for Adorama's Sunday Family Funday. Adorama sells camera and electronic equipment-type of stuff so it was an interesting idea to have a Family Funday. Today I was able to see that they had an entire block of tents and booths. Most of the booths were sponsored by various suppliers like Canon, Nikon, Bose, Olympus, Western Digital etc. There were drawings being held by most of the vendors as well as some carnival type games for the kids. Oh, and carnival-type food too.

Adorama spent a lot of money on Funday. I wonder if they can see the benefits in sales. For a store that mainly caters to adult customers it was an interesting way to draw in the adults by offers of fun for the whole family.

The cupcake classroom all ready to go.

The happy bakers

These are some professionally frosted cupcakes

And here are some amateur cupcakes (with one professional). What the heck...they taste the same!

Last night I took a cupcake class. My team made chocolate cupcakes. I picked up a few tips and went home with some treats from the class.

This is the Marquis de Lafayette who was more than a little helpful to the patriot's cause during the Revolutionary War (among his other accomplishments). Now he is forever memorialized in Union Square Park. Not a bad setting.

Street Bubbles

You never know what you'll see!

Looking across the street is a crappy newer building...but that is the site of Booth's Theatre built by Edwin Booth in 1869. Unfortunately, Edwin Booth was a better actor than businessman. He only ran the theatre till 1874.

Outdoor Art Gallery

Setting out all his art must take quite awhile. Hopefully he sells enough that it's faster to pack up at the end of the day!

It was a rough start to a Monday morning with train delays meaning I got to work 30 minutes later than usual. But yesterday I made real biscuits and put them to use in strawberry shortcake so that was a bonus!

Fata Morgana by Teresita Fernandez

Here's another glimpse at that artwork that I saw being installed back in March. The pieces are mirrors so they reflect whatever is near them. There are several installations around the park. Sometimes they look green from the reflection of grass. Other times you see the ground and people or the nearby trees or the shadows of the art itself. When you see them across the park it looks a little like construction in progress with the bare metal beams but it's something else when you walk under them.

Ghostriders

I had occasionally seen a couple of these beat up white bikes around the city but had never paid attention to what they mean. While it's a fitting memorial and a reminder to drive carefully it's amazing that the city allows the bikes to remain.

Garage Sale

This what a New York City garage sale looks like...without the garage. It's a little more complicated because you have to get permission to block off the street and it helps to get a lot of your neighbors to participate.
